Myopia Management

What is Myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, causes poor long-distance vision. In myopic eyes, the eyeball is either longer than normal, or the cornea is too curved, causing objects far away to appear blurry

2+ hours per day spent on “close work” (not including school work) can increase the risk of myopia.

There is a 25% chance a child will develop myopia if one parent is myopic and a 50% chance if both are myopic.

Specific binocular vision and focusing disorders increase the risk of myopia.

Myopia progresses faster at an early age, especially if a child is less than 9 years old.

Less than 60-90 minutes per day spent outdoors in natural sunlight could contribute to myopia.

Our Myopia Management

Treatments Include:

ORTHOKERATOLOGY NIGHTTIME LENSES worn while sleeping to temporarily reshape the front surface of the eye. This provides clear vision upon awakening without having to wear glasses or contact lenses throughout the day.

DUAL FOCUS DAYTIME LENS uses defocusing mechanism. The lens is designed to focus light directly on the retina while simultaneously creating a myopic defocus in front of the retina. This defocus is believed to send a signal to the eye to slow down the elongation of the eye, thereby controlling the progression of myopia.

PRESCRIPTION ATROPINE EYE DROPS inserted into both eyes at nighttime and works to mildly dilate the pupil and relax the focusing mechanism inside of the eye. Atropine also involves modulating neurotransmitters which prevents the eye growth in length.

SPECIALIZED SPECTACLE LENSES designed to focus peripheral light rays in front of the retina, to act as a stop signal to encourage slower eye growth and slow progression of myopia.

Myopia Treatments

TEMPORARY
Wearing glasses or standard contact lenses that are updated annually.

PERMANENT
Refractive surgery is only possible for adults with stabilized eyes.

PREVENTATIVE
Customized treatment plan that slows down the progression of myopia and reduces long-term risks.

Not all eye doctors have the training or certification to prescribe Myopia Management Therapy. This therapy requires a very exact and meticulous treatment approach, thus every patient receives a personalized treatment plan.

Our doctors have performed this technique since 1997 and have extensive experience and all the necessary equipment and computer software to accurately prescribe unique and personalized therapy for you including tracking myopia progression over the years.

Myopic Studies and Safety

Earlier studies such as LORIC, (The Longitudinal Orthokeratology Research in Children) COOKIE (Children’s Overnight Orthokeratolgy Investigation), CRAYON (Corneal Reshaping and Yearly Observation of Nearsightedness), CRIMP (Corneal Reshaping Inhibits Myopia Progression) and SMART (Stabilizing Myopia by Accelerating Reshaping Technique) all have proven the safety and efficacy in control of myopia using Orthokeratology treatment.

In the most recent years, advancement in myopia management has reached another plateau. FDA-approved MiSight® 1 day* soft contact and prescription low-dose Atropine eye drops have been widely utilized to slow down the progression of myopia.

Currently, there are several novel spectacle designs available across the world. Collectively, all treatments have the same goal–to prevent and slow down the progression of myopia.

Every child—no matter their age or needs—will have a myopia control option that perfectly suits their needs.
